The only thing I can think of is to recalibrate it using the control panel without twisting to the extremes. I am on windows XP service pack 3 and unfortunatly, the microsoft sidewinder software does not work anymore since service pack 2.

That ought to have the effect of increasing the external deadzones, which will increase sensitivity.
